Rafa Benitez revealed a late decision will be made on Jonjo Shelvey ahead of the home encounter against Southampton. Shelley missed the 2-0 defeat to Liverpool following a knee injury, but has returned to training this week. If he is ruled out, Mikel Merino could retain his start alongside Mo Diame in central midfield, with Isaac Hayden the other alternative. Rafa Benitez experimented with a three-man defence against Liverpool, but is expected to revert back to a 4-4-1-1 against Saints. So Paul Dummett should start at left-back, while Kenedy is likely to move back to the left wing. Matt Ritchie may earn a recall on the opposite flank, with Christian Atsu and Jacob Murphy other options out wide. Ayoze Perez is set to be handed a recall in the support striker role, with Dwight Gayle expected to spearhead the Newcastle attack. Joselu provides attacking cover. Rob Elliot, Jesus Gamez and Islam Slimani remain sidelined for the Magpies.
