Deadline day arrival Islam Slimani has been able to take some part in training ahead of the trip to Crystal Palace, and although he is dealing with a small thigh problem, he does appear to have a chance of making his debut this weekend. Rafa Benitez started with Ayoze Perez in a central support role behind lone striker Joselu last time out, although Dwight Gayle may be handed a recall against his former side, particularly if Slimani isn’t risked. Benitez’s options in central midfield mean he could look to one or both of Jonjo Shelvey and Isaac Hayden to provide fresh legs in place of Mo Diame and Mikel Merino. Kenedy made a very encouraging debut in the 1-1 draw with Burnley, so he should retain his place on the left wing, with Matt Ritchie and Jacob Murphy possible replacements for Christian Atsu on the opposite flank. Murphy swapped with Atsu shortly after the hour mark on Wednesday night. The back four could stay unchanged, with Javier Manquillo the player perhaps most likely to push for a recall in place of DeAndre Yedlin at right-back. Goalkeeper Martin Dubravka is expected to challenge Karl Darlow for the starting role in goal, although Rob Elliot was back in training on Friday, and provides another option. Florian Lejeune (foot) has also returned to training.
Yedlin – Clark – Lascelles – Dummett
Murphy – Shelvey – Merino – Kenedy
